Sheet Metal Fabrication Materials

Sheet Metal Materials

Sheet metal is a widely used form of raw material, usually 0.006 and 0.25 inches thick sheet used in sheet metal fabrication. Here are some popular sheet metal materials, stainless steel grade 304 is one of the most common options due to its good corrosion resistance, formability and weldability. If your applications are pumps, valves, chemical equipment, and marine product, grade 316 is recommended. For aluminum, the four most common aluminum grades available as sheet metal are 1100-H14, 3003-H14, 5052-H32, and 6061-T6. Brass is also widely used in the sheet metal fabrication process, it has more strength, corrosion resistance, and formability when compared to copper while retaining its conductivity.

Aluminum

Aluminum is one of the most popular materials in the sheet metal fabrication process because of its great properties such as lightweight and corrosion resistance, as well as cost-effectiveness and diversity in grades.Based on the characteristics of aluminum sheet metal parts, they are used throughout a wide range of industrial sectors from aerospace , automotive to food industries.

Benefits of Aluminum Material:

–replace heavy materials for weight reduction

– high resistance to corrosion, heat, rust, wear, and tear

–can be cut, bent, stretched, or rolled into nearly any shape

Brass

Brass is essentially an alloy of copper and a small amount of zinc. It is strong, corrosion-resistant, and has excellent electrical conductivity. Due to its properties, brass sheet metal fabricated parts are suited for electrical applications.

Benefits of Brass Material:

–Highly flexible and moldable, easy to bend to match the structure that they connected
–Can withstand high temperatures and have great conductivity
–Can withstand extreme temperatures
–Can prevent the growth of viruses and bacteria
– perfect for applications that require precision

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and great mechanical properties, which makes it an ideal material for sheet metal fabrication. Not all stainless steel alloy for sheet metal fabrication performs in the same way, you need to choose the right grade based on their cost and characteristics.

Benefits of Stainless Steel:

– Highly  structural, conductive, reflective, and sustainable
– Great corrosion resistance
– Stainless Steel 304:can be easily formed into various shapes, resistant to a wide variety of chemical corrodents, as well as industrial and marine conditions.
– Stainless Steel 316: known as marine grade stainless steel. It includes molybdenum, which further enhances its corrosion resistance, making it perfect for applications that involve salt water, acidic chemicals, or chloride.

Steel

Steel metal sheets, such as low carbon steel and cold rolled steel sheets are widely used in sheet metal fabrication to supply products for different industries. Steel is a fairly affordable material with some great mechanical properties and good formability. It also can be easily bent and welded, heat treatment can be used to improve its properties.

Benefits of  Steel:

– Low-cost
–Can be easily bent and welded
–Compatible with a wide range of surface finishing methods
